Hi my name is Karen Anderson and I have been in the fitness, health and nutrition field for over thirty years. I have been a fitness director or group fitness coordinator at many upscale clubs throughout the country. I was also the wellness coordinator for Canyon Ranch Health Spa, one of the leading health spas in the world, in Tucson, Arizona where I over saw the health and fitness programming for 900 employees.
Here in Flagstaff, I was employed as a nutritionist and health educator at Coconino County Health Department and was a very popular instructor at Flagstaff Athletic Club for numerous years. Currently, I am a physical education instructor for NAU and have been for the past 12 years and I teach nutrition for Coconino Community College.
My passions are teaching and learning about health, nutrition and fitness as well as creating movement experiences that are fun, safe, effective, and engaging. My goal is to share my love of movement, health, nutrition and fitness with my clients, my students and as many other people as I can touch in this lifetime. I love inspiring people toward a healthy lifestyle.
I am an excellent motivator, a caring person and I have extensive knowledge in the fields of fitness and nutrition. I am also a veteran fitness professional who can work with seasoned athletes as well as beginners and with people with biomechanical issues and/or health concerns.
I currently specialize in women’s fitness, senior fitness, corrective exercise, functional movement, back care, fitness for recovering cancer patients, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, fitness for osteopenia/osteoporosis, weight management, and general health and fitness. I can instruct almost any format of fitness class from Zumba and Dance to Boxing.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a B.S. degree as an exercise specialist with and emphasis in Nutritional Science and then pursued my graduate work at Columbia College in counseling with an emphasis in Dance Movement Therapy. Currently, I am pursuing another master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion with an emphasis in Fitness and Wellness from California, University of Pennsylvania.
I am certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a Health and Fitness Specialist; certified as a Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM); certified as a group fitness instructor and kickboxing instructor by the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). I also hold certifications in Pilates and Advanced Pilates, Turbo kick, perinatal fitness, indoor cycling, R.I.P.P.E.D (the one stop body shock), Zumba, and Zumba Core. I also just recently became a certified basic and advanced Boxing Fitness Instructor.
After being a group fitness instructor, tri - athlete and avid fitness nut for more than half my life, I have finally discovered weight lifting. I love it! It has kept my 50 something body strong, functional, dynamic, and able to do anything, even the most challenging aerobic interval routines, without getting hurt.
